When the day is grey

Take heart that

The rain will come

And the garden will grow

It has always been this way

Since the beginning of time

That these times will pass

So new seeds will sprout

Stronger and more resilient

There is peace in this knowing

That these times of turmoil

Can make tomorrow a brighter day

A path lined in roses

thorns tearing at vulnerabilities

love is not the easy road

only travelled by those who dare to lose

Keys cut by the stars

fitted by constant compassion and compromise

a journey to last all of eternity

loving with courageous abandon

Post surf croissant with my daughter. This time together is not only pure joy for the time spent in the ocean together but because it also marks a momentous change in attitudes compared to when I was her age. My enthusiasm to surf had been met with comments such as it would be a waste of time to teach a girl to surf. I share this poem The social experiment with you to express what it does when we allow sexist and misogynistic attitudes to take away opportunities from our girls and how these injustices (even if they seem small at first) set the foundations for inequality that follows us into adulthood. Today though I feel encouraged by the change feminism can deliver.

The social experiment
Take away the scales
Add a boy and a girl
Place one in front of the other
Blind the boy with sugar
Tie the girls hands
Bake the boy in golden sunshine
Beat the girl down and leave to rise
Measure only the material
Add judgement to the girl
Add praise to the boy
Discard cause and effect
Walk away from the results

Happiness

Nature of creation
I sway in the tree of dreams
Far from the ground of harsh realities
This freedom comes to mind
From a view seldom seen today
The peaceful breeze carries me,

New song out today ...Because I was born a girl 😊

I would like to firstly acknowledge that it was with the support of four men that the production of this song was made possible (the irony of which is not lost on me, I assure you). The lyrics are about challenging the patriarchal system that limits the potential of women and holds us all captive to a past system that is long overdue for change. Bringing into the general consciousness the fact that our societies are still predominately organised within the *realm of a patriarchal system of doing things. Women may have won equal rights in some places but we are yet to win equal treatment.

Our modern version of the patriarchal system may sound different from the past, however this only acts to silence any challenge to its power. With the framing of deceptive language that creates an illusion of equality rather than a reality of equality. We are confronted by this illusion everyday that passes and fails to close the gender pay gap.

It is very empowering to be able to recognise what you are up against because it provides the opportunity to question it and ultimately challenge it. Women hold the power to change the system and this song is just as much about recognising that power. (Note: the realm of the patriarchal system within this context just means we organise our societies based mostly from the perspective of the male lived experience, the consequence is that the benefits are directed to a greater degree towards men compared to women).
